CMA and its network facilities have led the movement to create compostable product field disintegration testing standards since 2017. The genesis of this work was inspired by the leadership of CMA technical advisor, Dr. Kelvin Okamoto, who encouraged CMA to use its extensive experience to lead the efforts within the ASTM International D34 Waste Management committee charged with developing field and operationally based technical standards for the solid and hazardous waste industries. Upon the recommendation and encouragement of Dr. Okamoto, Alex Thomas, composting expert/industry consultant and CMA field director, has taken on the D34.03 Treatment, Recovery and Reuse subcommittee chair role in this effort. To ensure success with this process, it is important that this committee include key advisors consisting of compost manufacturers, haulers, government and municipal leaders representing the many aspects and complexities of solid waste systems. To learn more about getting involved, or donating time to this effort, please email Alex.thomas@composterapproved.com to learn more. Thank you for balancing out the compostables space by ensuring compost manufacturer, haulers and cities continue to have a voice in the process of improving compostable product systems and strategies.
